Warning signs

Do Your Spark Plugs Need Replacing?

Engine misfires

Stuttering, shaking or a sudden loss of power under acceleration is the classic sign of a worn or fouled spark plug.

Rough idle

If the engine feels lumpy or vibrates at a standstill, one or more plugs may not be firing cleanly.

Poor fuel economy

Worn plugs burn fuel inefficiently — if you're filling up more often than usual, plugs are a common cause.

Hard starting

Extended cranking before the engine catches, especially on cold mornings, often points to tired spark plugs.

Common questions

Spark Plug FAQs

How often should spark plugs be replaced?

It varies by engine and plug type — standard plugs typically last 20,000–30,000 miles, while long-life iridium or platinum plugs can last 60,000–100,000 miles. We follow your manufacturer's schedule and can check your service history to confirm when they're due.

How long does spark plug replacement take?

Around an hour for most engines. Some engines with restricted access (certain V6s or engines with intake manifolds over the plugs) can take longer — we'll confirm the time when you book.

Does my diesel car have spark plugs?

No — diesel engines use glow plugs instead, which help cold starting. We check and replace glow plugs too, so if your diesel is struggling to start, get in touch.

Will new spark plugs improve performance?

If your current plugs are worn, yes — you'll typically notice smoother idling, better throttle response and improved fuel economy. New plugs won't add power beyond factory spec, but they restore how the engine should feel.
