Warning signs

Does Your Fuel Filter Need Changing?

Hard starting

Long cranking before the engine fires, or an engine that starts then dies, often means fuel isn't flowing freely.

Loss of power

Noticeable power drop under load — uphill or when overtaking — is a classic sign of a restricted fuel filter.

Engine hesitation

Stumbling or jerking when you accelerate suggests the engine is being starved of fuel at higher demand.

Poor fuel economy

A struggling fuel system makes the engine work harder — if consumption has crept up, the filter is worth checking.

Common questions

Fuel Filter FAQs

How often should the fuel filter be changed?

Most manufacturers recommend every 20,000–40,000 miles, though it varies by make and fuel type. Diesel filters generally need changing more often than petrol. We can check your service schedule and advise exactly when yours is due.

How long does a fuel filter change take?

About 30 minutes for most cars. Some vehicles with in-tank filters take longer — we'll confirm when you book with your registration number.

What happens if I don't change the fuel filter?

A blocked filter strains the fuel pump and starves the engine — leading to poor performance, breakdowns, and eventually a failed fuel pump, which is a much more expensive repair than a filter change.

Is the fuel filter more important on a diesel?

Yes — diesel fuel systems run at very high pressure and are sensitive to dirt and water. Many diesel filters also separate water from the fuel, so regular changes protect the injectors and pump from costly damage.
