Warning signs

When to Get Your Brake Fluid Checked

Soft or spongy pedal

Moisture in the fluid lowers its boiling point, making the brake pedal feel less firm.

Fluid looks dark or murky

Fresh brake fluid is clear to pale yellow. Dark, cloudy fluid has absorbed moisture and contaminants.

Longer stopping distances

Degraded fluid reduces hydraulic efficiency, meaning it takes longer for the brakes to respond fully.

Not changed in 2+ years

Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, even if it's never leaked or run low.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should brake fluid be changed?

Most manufacturers recommend every 2 years, regardless of mileage. Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and can affect braking performance.

Why does brake fluid need replacing if it isn't leaking?

Moisture absorption happens gradually through seals and hoses, not just from leaks. Contaminated fluid can boil under hard braking, causing a spongy pedal or reduced stopping power — known as brake fade.

Is this the same as a brake pad or disc replacement?

No — this is a separate service covering just the hydraulic brake fluid. If we spot worn pads, discs, or callipers during the check, we'll quote separately before doing any extra work.

How long does a brake fluid service take?

Typically around 30 minutes for most cars. We bleed all four brake lines to make sure there's no trapped air alongside the old fluid.

Don't risk brake fade
