Why AC performance fades over time

Unlike most car systems, an air-con system doesn't fail suddenly — it slowly loses refrigerant gas year after year, even with no visible leak. Rubber seals and hose connections naturally allow a small amount of gas to escape over time. Manufacturers generally expect a system to lose refrigerant gradually, which is exactly why a regas every 1–2 years is considered routine maintenance, not a repair.

If your car hasn't had a regas in a couple of years, reduced cooling on a hot day isn't a fault — it's just due.

Signs your AC needs attention

• Air is blowing but it's not cold. The classic sign of low refrigerant. The compressor and fans are working fine, there's just not enough gas left in the system to cool the air properly.
• Cooling is weak at idle but improves while driving. Often points to a condenser airflow issue or a fan that isn't kicking in properly.
• A musty smell when the AC first switches on. Usually bacteria or mould buildup in the evaporator — a cabin filter change or an AC clean sorts this out.
• Strange noises when the AC is switched on. Could be a failing compressor clutch or bearing — worth catching early since compressors are the most expensive part in the system.
• No cold air at all. Beyond just low gas — could mean a bigger leak, a failed compressor, or an electrical fault. Needs a proper diagnostic rather than a simple regas.

Regas vs. repair — what's the difference?

A regas is straightforward: the system is evacuated, tested for leaks, and refilled with the correct refrigerant and oil to manufacturer spec. It's the routine fix for gradual gas loss and usually takes under an hour.

A repair is needed when there's an actual fault — a damaged pipe, a failing compressor, or a leak large enough that a regas won't hold. If a regas doesn't restore cooling, or the system loses gas again within a few months, that's the sign of a leak that needs tracing and fixing properly rather than topping up again and again.
