MOT vs Car Service: What's the Difference?

If you own a car in the UK, you've probably heard "you need an MOT" and "you're due a service" used almost interchangeably. They're not the same thing — and mixing them up can leave your car legally roadworthy but mechanically neglected, or vice versa. Here's what actually separates the two.

What Is an MOT?

An MOT is a legally required annual test for any car over three years old. It's a pass/fail check carried out by a DVSA-approved tester (like us) to confirm your car meets the minimum legal standard for use on UK roads — nothing more.

During an MOT we check things like:

• Brakes, tyres, and steering
• Lights and indicators
• Seatbelts and horn
• Emissions
• Structural condition (rust, damage to the chassis or body)

Crucially, an MOT is a snapshot in time. It tells you whether your car meets the legal minimum on the day of the test — it doesn't tell you how well your engine is running, when your oil was last changed, or whether a part is close to failing next month. What Is a Car Service?

A car service is a preventative maintenance check — it's about keeping your car running well, not just legally compliant. Unlike an MOT, servicing isn't a legal requirement, but skipping it is one of the most common ways drivers end up with expensive repairs (or a failed MOT further down the line).

• Oil Service — oil and filter change plus a general health check, ideal for cars covering fewer miles between visits.
• Full Service — a more thorough check covering brakes, suspension, fluids, and key wear items alongside the oil change.
• Major Service — our most comprehensive check, recommended around every 2 years or 24,000 miles, covering everything in a Full Service plus additional components like spark plugs and fuel filters.

We also offer a standalone Brake Fluid Service, since brake fluid absorbs moisture over time and should be replaced roughly every 2 years regardless of your service schedule.

The Key Difference, Simply Put

An MOT asks: "Is this car legal to drive today?" A service asks: "Is this car in good health, and will it stay reliable?"

A car can pass its MOT and still be overdue an oil change, running low on brake fluid, or heading toward a costly failure in six months. Equally, a well-serviced car can still fail its MOT over something unrelated to routine maintenance, like a cracked light lens or worn wiper blade.

Can You Get Both Done at the Same Time?

Yes — and it's usually the smart move. Booking your MOT and service together means we only need your car once, and any issue we spot during the service can often be fixed before it turns into an MOT failure. It also tends to work out more convenient and cost-effective than two separate visits.

How Often Do You Need Each?

• MOT: every 12 months, once your car turns three years old.
• Service: typically every 12 months or 10,000–12,000 miles, though this varies by vehicle — check your car's handbook or ask us when you book.
