How to Pass Your MOT First Time

Why so many cars fail their MOT on the first attempt, a simple pre test checklist you can run through at home, and what to expect when you bring your car to us in Hayes.

How to Pass Your MOT First Time

A large number of cars fail their MOT on the first attempt every year, and the frustrating part is that most of those failures come down to small, avoidable faults rather than anything seriously wrong with the car. A blown bulb, a worn wiper blade, or a tyre that has quietly dropped below the legal tread limit are enough to turn a straightforward test into a fail and a second trip. The good news is that passing first time is largely within your control, and a few simple checks before you bring your car in can make all the difference.

The Most Common Reasons Cars Fail

Lighting faults are consistently one of the top reasons cars fail their MOT. A single blown brake light, indicator or number plate bulb is enough to fail a car that's otherwise in perfect condition. Tyres are another frequent cause, whether that's tread worn below the 1.6mm legal minimum, a bulge in the sidewall, or a slow puncture nobody noticed. Brakes, suspension components, and a cracked or chipped windscreen in the driver's line of sight round out the most common fail points.

What makes these failures so frustrating is how easily most of them can be caught beforehand. A quick walk around your car the night before your test, checking every light, glancing at the tyre tread, topping up washer fluid and giving the windscreen a wipe down, catches the majority of issues before a tester ever gets involved. It costs nothing but a few minutes.

Your Pre Test Checklist

Before you bring your car in, work through this list. It takes most people about fifteen minutes:

1. All lights and indicators. Headlights, brake lights, fog lights, indicators and the number plate light should all work. Ask someone to check your brake lights while you press the pedal.
2. Tyre tread and condition. Minimum 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre, with no cuts, bulges or embedded objects.
3. Windscreen and wipers. No chips or cracks larger than 10mm in the driver's direct line of sight, and wiper blades that clear the glass cleanly without smearing.
4. Washer fluid. Topped up and working on the windscreen, and the rear window if fitted.
5. Number plates. Clean, legible and correctly formatted front and rear.
6. Horn. Working and audible.
7. Mirrors. No cracks, securely fitted, with a clear rear view.
8. Fluid leaks. Check underneath the car overnight for any obvious oil or coolant drips.

If anything on that list looks borderline, it's worth getting it looked at before your test rather than risking a fail. Bring it in and we're happy to give your car a quick once over beforehand, and can usually sort small issues like bulbs or wiper blades on the spot.

What Happens During the Test

Your Class 4 MOT at Marieston Service Centre usually takes around 45 to 60 minutes. Our DVSA approved testers work through a standard checklist covering the body and structure of the car, all lights, steering and suspension, brakes, tyres and wheels, the exhaust and emissions, seatbelts and a number of other safety items. Anything that comes up as an advisory, a fault that isn't serious enough to fail the car today but is worth keeping an eye on, will be explained clearly, as will anything that results in an outright fail.

If your car doesn't pass first time, there's no need to panic. Most failures are minor and quick to put right. We'll give you a clear list of what failed, explain it in plain language, and provide a no obligation quote for the work. If we carry out the repair, your retest is free of charge.
