How Often Should You Change Your Engine Oil?

Every 6 months? Once a year? Here's how often your engine oil really needs changing — and what happens if you leave it too long.

How Often Should You Change Your Engine Oil?

Engine oil is the cheapest insurance your car will ever have. It lubricates, cools and cleans the hardest-working parts of your engine — and when it's old or low, those parts wear out fast. Yet "how often should I change my oil?" is one of the questions we get asked most at the garage. Here's the simple answer, without the jargon.

The Short Answer

For most modern cars in the UK: every 6,000–10,000 miles, or once every 6–12 months — whichever comes first.

The exact figure for your car is in the handbook, and it depends on the engine, the oil type and how you drive. But the golden rule is the "whichever comes first" part — oil degrades with time, not just miles. Even a car that barely leaves the driveway needs fresh oil at least once a year.

Why Time Matters as Much as Miles

Oil doesn't just wear out from driving. Sitting in the engine, it slowly absorbs moisture, oxidises and loses the additives that protect against corrosion and sludge. That's why a low-mileage car that only does short trips can have worse oil than a motorway car with three times the miles.

Drive Like This? Change It More Often

Manufacturers call it "severe use" — but in reality it describes most everyday driving in West London:

  • Lots of short journeys (school run, shops) — the engine never fully warms up, so moisture and fuel build up in the oil
  • Stop-start traffic — the engine runs for ages while the mileage barely moves
  • Older engines or cars that have missed services in the past

If that sounds like your driving, an oil change every 6 months or 6,000 miles is the safe rhythm — which is exactly what our Oil Service is designed for.

5 Signs Your Oil Needs Changing Now

  • The oil warning light is on — stop driving and check the level immediately; a red oil light can mean dangerously low pressure.
  • Dark, gritty oil on the dipstick — healthy oil is amber-brown and smooth; black, thick or gritty oil is overdue.
  • The engine sounds louder than usual — ticking or tapping on start-up often means the oil isn't protecting properly.
  • You can't remember your last oil change — if it's been over a year, it's due. Simple as that.
  • Burning smell or blue-ish exhaust smoke — could mean oil is burning or leaking; get it checked before it becomes an engine problem.

What Happens If You Don't Change It?

Old oil turns to sludge. Sludge blocks the narrow oil channels that feed the top of the engine, parts start running metal-on-metal, and wear accelerates quietly until something expensive lets go — camshafts, turbos, even a seized engine. A £100-ish oil service skipped for two years can quite literally become a £2,000+ engine repair. It's the worst trade in motoring.

Can't I Just Top It Up?

Topping up between services is fine — and you should, if the level drops. But topping up is not a substitute for changing the oil. Fresh oil poured into old, contaminated oil is like adding clean water to a dirty bath: the level rises, but everything is still dirty. Only a full drain, new oil and a new oil filter resets the clock.

Does the Right Oil Matter?

Yes — more than most drivers realise. Modern engines are built for specific oil grades (like 5W-30 or 0W-20) and specifications, and using the wrong one can affect everything from fuel economy to turbo life — and even your manufacturer warranty. At Marieston Service Centre we always use the correct manufacturer-spec oil for your exact engine, and we update your service history so there's a record of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check my oil level?
With the engine cold and the car on level ground, pull the dipstick, wipe it, re-insert it fully, then pull it out again. The level should sit between the min and max marks. Check once a month and before any long journey.

Does a full service include an oil change?
Yes — our Full Service and Major Service both include the oil and filter change plus much more. The Oil Service is the right choice in between.

My car says "long-life oil" — do I still need yearly changes?
Long-life oils can stretch intervals on mostly-motorway driving, but for urban stop-start use most manufacturers still recommend annual changes. When in doubt, follow the time limit, not just the mileage.

How long does an oil change take?
Usually under an hour — most customers wait while it's done.
