Gearbox Trouble? The Warning Signs for Manual, Automatic, DSG & CVT

The gearbox is one of those parts that quietly does its job for years without a second thought — until it doesn't. Because most drivers never think about their transmission until something feels wrong, gearbox problems often get ignored for weeks or months before anyone books it in. That delay is exactly what turns a simple fluid service into an expensive repair.

Here's what to actually listen and feel for, whatever type of gearbox you're driving.

Manual gearboxes

Manual gearboxes are generally the most reliable, but they're not maintenance-free. The most common early warning sign is gear selection getting stiff, notchy, or crunchy — particularly noticeable when the car is cold. This usually points to low or degraded gearbox oil, which is often a straightforward fluid service rather than anything more serious, as long as it's caught early.

If you're regularly grinding into gear, especially reverse or second, that's worn synchromesh rings — the gearbox needs a proper inspection before it gets worse.

Automatic transmissions

Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) degrades with heat and mileage, and unlike engine oil, a lot of drivers never think to have it changed. Signs of an overdue fluid service include delayed or jerky gear changes, a flare in engine revs before the gearbox catches, or the car hesitating when pulling away. A fluid service restores smooth shifting and protects the torque converter and valve body from premature wear.

DSG / DCT (dual-clutch) gearboxes

Dual-clutch gearboxes — DSG, S-Tronic, PDK — feel like an automatic but work more like two manual gearboxes working in tandem. They need specialist fluid and filter changes at manufacturer-specified intervals, usually more frequent than a conventional automatic. Warning signs include a shudder from standstill, hesitation when pulling away, or a "clunk" between gears. These symptoms are common enough on high-mileage DSGs that many owners assume it's normal — it isn't, and it's usually fixable with the correct service.

CVT gearboxes

Continuously variable transmissions rely on dedicated CVT fluid, and using the wrong type — or leaving it too long between changes — is one of the most common causes of premature CVT failure. A whining noise under acceleration, or a sensation the engine is "revving but not going anywhere," are both signs worth acting on quickly.

Signs common to every gearbox type

• Slipping or jumping out of gear. The car unexpectedly loses drive or pops out of gear on its own — needs inspecting before further damage occurs.
• Grinding or whining noises during gear changes or while driving in gear, pointing to worn bearings or low fluid.
• A transmission warning light on the dash. This means a fault code has already been logged — an OBD diagnostic scan will identify the exact cause before anything is touched.
• Burning smell. Often overheating fluid — stop driving and get it checked rather than risk further damage.

Service vs. repair

A gearbox service is preventative — oil or fluid changes and inspection to keep things healthy, and by far the cheaper path if you catch symptoms early. A gearbox repair addresses an existing fault, like a worn synchro or a failed bearing, and is a bigger job. The gap between the two is usually just how long the early warning signs were ignored.
