10 Warning Signs Your Car Needs a Service

Spot these warning signs before your car breaks down

10 Warning Signs Your Car Needs a Service

Most drivers wait for a service reminder before booking their car in — but your car usually tells you it needs attention long before that. Spotting these warning signs early can save you hundreds of pounds in repair bills and keep you safe on the road.

Here are the 10 most common warning signs your car needs a service, what causes them, and what to do next.

1. The Engine Warning Light Is On

The check engine light is your car's way of saying something isn't right. It could be something minor like a loose fuel cap, or something serious like a misfire or emissions fault. Either way, never ignore it — a quick car diagnostic check will pinpoint the exact fault code before it turns into an expensive repair.

What to do: Book a diagnostics check as soon as possible — especially if the light is flashing.

2. Strange Noises When Braking

Squealing, grinding or scraping noises when you press the brake pedal usually mean your brake pads are worn and the metal backing is rubbing against the disc. Grinding brakes are a serious safety risk — and worn pads left too long will damage the discs too, doubling your repair cost. A spongy brake pedal can also mean your brake fluid needs changing.

What to do: Get your brakes inspected straight away.

3. The Car Pulls to One Side

If your car drifts left or right when you're driving straight, the most common causes are uneven tyre pressure, wheel alignment issues or worn suspension components. Left unchecked, it also wears your tyres out unevenly and much faster.

What to do: Check your tyre pressures first. If it still pulls, book a suspension and steering check or a tyre inspection.

4. Smoke or Steam From the Bonnet

Steam usually means your engine is overheating — often caused by low coolant, a leaking radiator or a failing water pump. Blue smoke means burning oil, and black smoke points to a fuel system problem. An overheating engine can fail completely if you keep driving.

What to do: Pull over safely, let the engine cool, and don't drive far. Book an engine and cooling system check.

5. Poor Fuel Economy

Filling up more often than usual? A drop in MPG is one of the most overlooked signs your car is overdue a service. Common culprits include a clogged air filter, a dirty fuel filter, worn spark plugs or old engine oil — all things a Full Service puts right.

What to do: Book a Full Service — the fuel savings often cover part of the cost.

6. Vibrations Through the Steering Wheel

A shaking steering wheel — especially at motorway speeds — usually means unbalanced wheels, uneven tyre wear or worn suspension parts. Vibration when braking often points to warped brake discs.

What to do: Get your tyres checked. If the vibration happens when braking, have the brake discs inspected.

7. Difficulty Starting the Engine

If your car cranks slowly, needs several attempts to start, or just clicks when you turn the key, your battery is likely on its way out — or the starter motor or alternator is struggling. Batteries typically last 4–5 years, and cold mornings expose weak ones fast.

What to do: Book a battery health check before you end up stranded. If the battery is fine, an electrical check will find the real cause.

8. Grinding Gears or a Slipping Clutch

Struggling to get into gear, a crunching noise when changing, or the engine revving without the car accelerating (clutch slip) are all signs of clutch or gearbox wear. Caught early, it might only need a gearbox oil change — left too long, you could be looking at a full clutch replacement.

What to do: Book a clutch and gearbox inspection at the first sign of trouble.

9. Unusual Smells Inside the Car

Your nose is a surprisingly good diagnostic tool:

What to do: Note when the smell happens (driving, braking, AC on) and mention it when you book — it helps our technicians find the fault faster.

10. It's Been Over 12 Months Since Your Last Service

Even if your car feels fine, engine oil degrades, filters clog and brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. Most manufacturers recommend a service every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Skipping services also hurts your car's resale value — a full service history can add hundreds to the price you get when you sell.

What to do: If it's been over a year, book an Oil, Full or Major Service depending on your mileage and when the bigger items were last done.

Oil, Full or Major Service — Which One Do You Need?

  • Oil Service — engine oil and filter change plus essential safety checks (brakes, tyres, lights, battery, fluid levels). Ideal between bigger services or for low-mileage drivers.
  • Full Service — everything in the Oil Service plus air filter replacement, fuel filter inspection, brake pad and disc measurement, suspension, steering and exhaust checks, and a 60-point vehicle health check. The right choice once a year for most drivers.
  • Major Service — everything in the Full Service plus timing belt and cabin filter inspection, a comprehensive multi-point check, a full road test and your service light reset with digital service history updated. Recommended every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

Not sure which one fits? Give us a call and we'll recommend the right package for your car's age and mileage — no upselling.

What Happens If You Ignore These Warning Signs?

Small problems rarely stay small. A dirty air filter strains the engine. Worn brake pads destroy the discs. Low coolant becomes a blown head gasket. Regular servicing is always cheaper than the repair bill that follows neglect — and some faults, like brakes and tyres, put your safety at risk too.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I service my car?
Every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. If you cover high mileage, an Oil Service in between keeps the engine protected.

Can I drive with the engine warning light on?
If it's solid, drive carefully and book a diagnostic check soon. If it's flashing, stop driving as soon as it's safe — a flashing light means an active fault that can damage the engine.

What's the difference between an Oil, Full and Major Service?
An Oil Service covers the oil change and essential safety checks. A Full Service adds filter replacements and detailed brake, suspension and exhaust checks. A Major Service includes everything plus timing belt and cabin filter inspection, a road test and a service light reset.

Is a car service the same as an MOT?
No — an MOT is the legal minimum safety test, while a service keeps your car healthy and prevents faults. Booking them together saves time and often catches MOT failures in advance.
